In July, BMC Software plans to release an Android edition of MyIT, an app that gives employees of small to large businesses self-service access to IT (information technology) help, conference room scheduling, and other services at their workplaces.
"We want to do for these services what [Salesforce.com] did for the sales force," said Jason Frye, BMC's senior director, Office of the CTO, speaking with TabletPCReview at Pepcom's Digital Experience press event in New Yok City.
In a demo of the iOS version of MyIT, Frye showed how the app can be used to track the progress of your requests to the help desk, find out when services like email will be down, and request access to a projector for delivering a presentation.
The app also provides access to an IT knowledge base and to detailed floor maps which let employees see at a glance where the nearest printer is located, for example.
Also available as an HTML app for PC use, the app is designed for the emerging era of BYOD (bring your own device), Frye noted.
Although MyIT is already in use by large enterprises, including a major bank, Frye also sees it as a great fit for companies with ten employees or less.
The app itself is free, but companies must pay to use it in conjunction with BMC's backend IT services infrastructure. Yet monthly pricing per employees is "less than a cup of coffee," Frye contended.
For down the road, Frye said, BMC is looking at partnering with other vendors to provide integrated access to other services -- such as human resources, for instance -- from the app.
