Now that we have all these mega-powerful next generation game consoles, what are we supposed to do with them? It wont do to just play the same old games at a higher resolution. There are a number of technologies on the way to make the next generation really feel like the next generation, but Thorskan might be the tech that takes us there first.
Thorskan is an environmental scanning technology developed by Polish company Better Reality. Its designed to take high-resolution scans of real places and transform them into fully immersive 3D worlds with texture resolutions as high as 26,000 x 26,000 pixels. The magic is in the engine behind Thorskan, not the hardware. Designers record high-resolution images of the desired space, then feed them into Thorskan.
Movie studios are using the technology to create photo-realistic CGI more quickly, but the game industry is beginning to make use of it too. The first title that uses Thorskan environments is Get Even, which has just gotten its first official trailer. In the video above you can see the raw output from Thorskan. Below, in the trailer for Get Even you can see some of the same environments after post processing.
Get Even is a first-person shooter that is coming to PS4, Xbox One, and PC. The studio says the game is currently slated for a 2015 release, so the next generation isnt going to be here as soon as we might have hoped.
