In order to further expand its presence in India, Apple is now said to be planning on setting up small stores across cities and towns, Times of India reports. This report surfaces a couple of weeks after Apple was reported to have approached the government to relax the local sourcing clause in its FDI policy for single-brand retail.
These small stores will be set up by Apples existing distributers like Redington and Ingram Micro as well as other trade partners. These stores are likely to be between 400-600 square feet and will be seen at most of the neighborhoods and shopping centers. Apple is said to be taking this route to penetrate tier-II cities like Pune, Vizag, Guwahati, Durgapur and Gangtok, where it sees a lot of potential due to the presence of a large student population. The report adds that Currents Technology Retail, one of Apples premium retailers, has already set up such stores in Kolkata and Panchkula in Haryana.
With Samsungs products boasting a high visibility in the country due to their presence in most of the stores, Apple is hoping to replicate it with this new strategy. Though these stores will sell all the devices in Apples portfolio, they will mainly focus on the iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPad mini and the iPad 2, which fall in the sub-Rs 30,000 price range.
In its quest to gain more traction in the Indian market, Apple has been aggressively offering EMI and buyback schemes on devices like the Mac, iPads and the new iPhones. Though it had discontinued the iPhone 4, Apple reintroduced the phone in India to take advantage of the price segment it falls under. It recently also introduced a unique scheme called Buy and Try, wherein a person could buy an iPhone 5C or iPhone 5S and then let you return it within two weeks of buying the phone.
