The iPhone has always been positioned as a premium product, which is why the never-ending rumors of a cheaper version seemed bizarre. But this may be the year Apple finally gives in and makes a cheaper iPhone. A series of leaks showing plastic shells in a variety of colors seem to be cases from unassembled (and unannounced) iPhones. Now a new image purports to show the packaging for this phone, and it comes with a name iPhone 5C.
The speculation is that the C in this case stands for Color, which is probably going to be the selling point of the cheaper iPhone. You can get many of Apples other portable devices in funky colors, but the iPhone has traditionally been more understated. The move back to a plastic material allows the Cupertino company to do the fun colors, but still keep the flagship product pure.
The packaging has the same rounded square shape as the leaked phone cases did. Emblazoned on the side is iPhone 5C in the typical Apple font. They certainly look legitimate, but its odd Apple would go back to plastic packaging. The company has been moving away from that in recent years.
Apple is expected to announce a new iPhone and possibly updated iPads at an event sometime this fall. The iPhone 5C could simply have the iPhone 5 internals, while the flagship device gets a spec bump. The iPhone 5C could also simply be a well-engineered hoax, but its the most solid these cheap iPhone rumors have ever been.
