Nokia Lumia 625 leaks in China, packs 4.7-inch screen

Well, what do we have here? According to China's official certification website (TENAA), this above is the unannounced Nokia Lumia 625. The handset apparently features a 4.7-inch WVGA screen with super-sensitive touch, 1.2GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor, 512MB of RAM and 2,000mAh battery -- basically a lower-end model. While the listing only mentions GSM / GPRS and WCDMA / HSPA support, the phone supposedly includes LTE, and wraps everything in a unibody design that follows the attractive looks of its smaller cousin, the Lumia 620. In fact, the shape appears to match the RM-941 that passed through the FCC back in June. The device is expected to land in China at the end of July for 1,999 yuan ($325) -- just hit the source link below for more info.

WhatsApp expands its business model to iOS, will cost users 99 cents per year

Even though the WhatsApp iPhone application received an update yesterday, today the popular messaging service made it official in a blog post which details notes from the latest release. What's of interest here, however, is that WhatsApp's brining a familiar cost scheme over to Apple's platform. Essentially, iOS users can download the app free of charge, but they will now have to pay a 99-cent yearly fee after the first twelve months of using it -- a business model similar to the one WhatsApp already implements on Android, BlackBerry and Windows Phone. Hey, it's still but a small price to pay to somewhat fashionably keep tabs on all your amigos 24/7, eh?

Washing Machine -Bicycle-Powered

It took four years to built the pedal-powered washing machine primarily from bicycle parts and empty barrels.This project was supervised and built by MIT students and faculty. Thanks to MIT students for thier active participation in this project.

The washing machine comprises of an outer housing made of a standard oil drum cut apart and welded to make a shorter barrel. The inner drum is made from a set of identical plastic pieces bolted together. The system is then connected to an old bicycle without wheels. The chain is connected to a gear mechanism harnessed from an old geared mountain bike. The highest gear is used for the spin cycle and the lowest one for the wash cycle. Cool idea and perhaps a cool machine.

The device to some extent is incomplete, as some water leaked around the edges of the barrel during the test. Anyway the they have successfully implemented thier idea. With some ammendments the product will be ready in the market very soon.

Magic Lantern gives 14 stops of DR to Canon 5D Mark III with dual ISO recording

Magic Lantern's brought some miraculous features to Canon EOS DSLRs lately, including RAW video recording on the 5D Mark III, and video recording, period, to the 50D. Its latest feat is no less amazing, even for jaded DSLR shooters. By exploiting unused dual ISO amplifiers on a sensor chip in the Canon 5D Mark III and 7D, new firmware allows you to record lighter parts of a scene at ISO 100 and darker portions at ISO 1600. It works with RAW video and stills on the 5D III and RAW stills only on the 7D, with both requiring post-processing after capture. That bit of creative coding increases the dynamic range of both cameras to around 14, though not without some drawbacks. Namely, the 7D implementation is buggy for now, you'll lose some resolution while gaining aliasing in shadows and highlights, and won't be able to check critical focus by zooming in. Still, the organization has a track record of quickly improving new features -- so, if you've got the guts to risk voiding your warranty, hit the source.

Panasonic launches $100 SC-NT10 rugged wireless speaker

Panasonic is no stranger to the rugged gadget game, so it doesn't come as a surprise that the company's newest wireless speaker is another toughie. Called the SC-NT10, the 4W compact device houses two teensy full-range speakers and a passive radiator. The company claims its "quad proof" design can take on dust, splashes of water, intense heat or freezing cold and drops from as high as 30 inches. Other features include NFC for quick Bluetooth pairing, a 3.5mm jack, and up to eight hours of battery life. It won't ship until this fall (estimated date is sometime in August), but it's currently available for preorder for $100 each. If you find that price too steep for a hockey puck-sized speaker, you can check out SC-NT10's less edgy but cheaper cousin.

Apple patent hints at possibility of Liquidmetal iPhone and iPad

For all its tough chemical properties and unusual capacity for intricate molding, Liquidmetal is apparently too uneconomical for anything much bigger than Apple's SIM ejector tool or, perhaps, the chess pieces rendered above (for illustrative purposes only!). Attempts to use so-called "metallic glass" to mass-produce larger objects, like the bodies of phones or tablets, have been hampered by difficulties in creating large sheets of controllable thickness, because stretching and other traditional techniques just cause the stuff to break. However, a patent recently awarded to Crucible Intellectual Property (the shell company representing the exclusive licensing tie-up between Apple and Liquidmetal Technologies) suggests some progress has been made towards removing this barrier.

Now, we can't claim dwarven levels of expertise on the subject, but we're inclined to agree with the interpretation of the folks at Electronista, who spotted that the patent describes a range of factory methods (generally involving lots of melting and conveyor belts) for creating sheets of metallic glass of controllable thickness between 0.1mm and 25mm and in widths of up to three meters. The paperwork explicitly mentions the use of these sheets in making iPhones, iPads, watches or indeed "any electronic device known the art." HP Split x2 Windows 8 hybrid now available on Best Buy for $750

Perhaps the "x2" in Split x2's name indicates that HP worked double-time to bring the device to market before its August release date. A follow up to the Envy x2, the device is a 13-inch Windows 8 hybrid with a 1,366 x 768 detachable screen that houses a 128GB SSD. The other specs are identical to the one we previewed, but you can only get the Intel Core i3 version right now -- no word on when the i5 flavor will follow. You can check out the entry-level Slate x2 at Best Buy (currently the only place you can buy one) where it's available for $750. For those who prefer Android-powered hybrids, however, you will just have to wait until that Slatebook x2 hits the market.

HTC One Mini shows up as 601e in Chinese certification database

Why hello again, One Mini! While HTC has yet to make this metallic 4.3-inch phone official, the closest thing we have right now is this certification in China's TENAA database. What's new is the "601e" model name, which positions it in a similar tier as the other slightly bigger 600 series devices destined for China, namely the Desire 606w (aka Desire 600 Dual SIM globally), Desire 608t and Desire 609d. But unlike these models nor the Chinese variants of the larger One, it appears that this 601e with WCDMA radio is just a single-SIM device. With the appearance of this filing, it shouldn't be long before the One Mini finally hits the shelves around the world.

Relaxation is no more about peace rather it seems to be about having as many cool gadgets around you which let you enjoy favourite music or any cool video irrespective of the place you are in? US Cellular to reintroduce contracts for existing customer upgrades

Snagging a subsidized phone after completing a two-year contract with US Cellular has meant not having to ink another 24-month commitment, but it looks like that's about to change. We've gotten wind from an internal source that the firm will return to its old ways, requiring existing Belief Plan customers angling for discounted hardware to hitch their wagon to the carrier for an additional two trips around the sun. These changes aren't slated to take effect until July 27th, so we recommend pulling the trigger on that upgrade you've been eyeing before then.

Google's always cooking something up, and the company has our undivided attention when the press gets invited over for a breakfast featuring Sundar Pichai, the man in charge of Chrome and Android. While the invite doesn't indicate anything specific, we're expecting to hear some sort of announcement next Wednesday. We'd love to get some more details on the elusive Android 4.3 or perhaps a new Nexus 7 (heck, a new Nexus anything would be just fine with us), but we'll just have to wait and see what Sundar has in store.

Half-Life modders gain Valve's approval, will launch new 'Sven Co-op' on Steam

Having developed Sven Co-op for the better part of two decades, the team behind the Half-Life mod has finally been given the keys to Valve Corporation's candy store. The company has granted the modding group access to the original game's engine in order to produce a custom edition that's designed to support co-operative play. In return, the next Sven Co-op, in which players have to work together to survive and solve puzzles in various time periods, will be made available through Steam as a free-to-play title. All we ask is that Daniel "Sven" Fearon uses his new-found access to hunt around for any files entitled Episode Three, and keep all of our flickering hopes alive.

UK to test driverless cars on public roads before the end of 2013

While Americans have seen a few driverless cars on the open road, their British counterparts have had to settle for demos on private circuits. They'll get a better glimpse soon, though, as the UK Department for Transport now expects tests on public streets by the end of 2013. The initial trial runs will be gentle -- Oxford University's Nissan Leaf-based RobotCars will drive only on lightly trafficked roads, with humans tagging along in the event of a crisis. We haven't yet seen a timetable for more aggressive experiments, but we're not exactly in a hurry to compete with early autonomous cars during rush hour.
