Apple has been widely rumored to be prepping a new version of its iPad mini with a much higher resolution screen for release this fall. However, a well-known analyst now says this won't happen until 2014.
The current version of Apple's 7.9-inch tablet has a 1024 x 768 resolution, giving it a much lower pixel density than Apple's full-size model. It wasn't long after the iPad mini debuted that the first reports began to circulate the second-generation model would have a 2048 x 1536 (QXGA) resolution.
According to Richard Shim from DisplaySearch, that's not how it's going to work out. He says that the iPad mini 2 will be thinner than its predecessor with a faster A6 processor, but the same 1024 x 768 screen.
Shim says a third-generation iPad mini with a 2048 x 1536 display will be released in "early 2014". He cited sources in the component supply chain as the source of this information.
The DisplaySearch analyst also says that the iPad 5 is going to be released in the July-September period. This will have an Apple A7 processor and the same 9.7-inch, 2048 x 1536 display as its predecessors.
All of these tablets are expected to debut running iOS 7, the next version of Apple's operating system that was unveiled -- but not released -- earlier this month.
