For those of you worried that Disney was going to somehow tarnish the Star Wars franchise more than George Lucas already has, news that ABC is currently in talks to develop a live-action television series based on the franchise will probably put you in an even more cautious headspace.
President of ABC Entertainment Group, Paul Lee, said that ABC is in talks with Lucasfilm, which Disney purchased for over $4 billion back in October of last year, to develop television shows based on characters from the franchise. Lee didnt divulge too many details about what theyre asking of Lucasfilm, simply saying that ABC has started conversations with them. He did note, though, that he has an inkling of what ABC would want for a live-action television series, but Lucasfilm currently has a lot of work on its plate at the moment. This work, of course, is referencing the upcoming Star Wars Episode VII, which is slated for a 2015 release, and the following two entries in the third trilogy will come along in a somewhat short two-year timeframe per film.
Later this year on September 24, Marvels Joss Whedon-helmed Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will hit the small screen, and we could use that as a measuring stick to see what happens when Disney purchases a big franchise it didnt create, then goes on to eventually bring it to the small screen. The Star Wars universe is obviously rich not even counting the extended universe, canonical or only semi-canonical so there is certainly room for creating great story lines and deep characters. If the show received a large budget similar to Game of Thrones, for example, it could bring the famed universe to life in a setting that isnt a movie theater.
These talks are extremely preliminary, and if a television series should commence development, we dont even know if itll air before Episode VII hits theaters. The only thing we can do is wait in anticipation or fear.
