DoT to test imported telecom products before use in India: Report

The Indian government is gearing up to keep a check on imported telecom gadgets, peripherals and malicious software on network devices before these are exposed to Indian networks. ET is reporting that the telecom department has identified 12 out of the 25 telecom products as vulnerable and risky items which will have to go through an authorized security check and test in Indian labs before being used. The process will be in effect from October 1 on devices including mobile devices, SIM cards, mobile hardware as well as network equipment, base stations, and customer database servers.

This will be a major move by the Indian government and can affect the GSM or CDMA service providers as well as cellphone vendors, considering that most of these companies import telecom gear from abroad. Mobile phone companies do not find this move welcoming as any flaws in the imported gears and services would directly affect their network and growth expansion targets in India. Other factors that would concern the companies are the incompetency in implementation of global standards while conducting tests and lack of clarity on test-conducting party lab in India.

Reportedly, DoTs leaked documents have so far suggested Wipro to set up a potential telecom products certification lab. However, there is no assurance on whether Wipro will be able to ready the lab for implementation of this process.

A few months back, there were reports on the Bureau of Indian Standards working on similar tests for standardizing imported gadgets including mobile phones, laptops and more before being sold in India or imported to international markets.
